OVERVIEW

We offer Common Entrance (CE) German examinations as a summer exam, and at 13+ only. Our German specification is designed by a team of experienced Heads of Department from both prep and senior schools, and approved by ISEB’s Academic Committee for Languages.

Our German syllabus aims to help pupils develop the skills to understand the written and spoken language and use the language effectively across a broad range of linguistic activities while encouraging positive attitudes towards the use of foreign languages and towards speakers of foreign languages.

Candidates may use a standard English-German dictionary during the preparation period for speaking exams only. Candidates whose first language is not English may have access to a bilingual translation dictionary, but not in the target language (German).

In addition to the specification, we advise prep schools to read the ‘Modern languages listening and speaking instructions and regulations’ in the Documentation section below.

German for CE at 13+

Candidates taking CE German at 13+ will sit three papers, in speaking, listening, and reading and writing. Our German specification is designed to be accessible and encouraging to learners of all abilities, so there are no distinct levels in the CE German exam.

See the German specification below for more details.
